FBLA National Leadership Conference

This summer STC students Mary O'Keeffe and Claire RedingerSTC in ATL 2016 traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the National Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Leadership Conference and placed 10th in the Publication Design contest.

They traveled with six other students from Lincoln Southwest and their adviser, Mr. Hinrichs, who is a '99 STC alum. According to Mr. Hinrichs, the girls were an absolute delight to have on the trip, and he was honored to be able to take them on their first trip to nationals. This was the first time STC had qualified/sent students to compete at nationals, so for the girls to place in the top ten on the first trip is quite an achievement. There were over 10,000 students that attended this national conference who competed in over 70 different events, so competition is pretty tough, but Claire and Mary came through in true STC fashion!

During the conference the Nebraska FBLA delegation attended an Atlanta Braves game on July 1. Pictured are two current STC students in addition to three STC alums.

ACT Camp

Olympic Training

From June 6 through June 10, eighteen students committed their summer mornings and some afternoons to a focused preparation for their ACT test held on June 11. This special preparation class was open to students entering grades 10 through 12 for the 2016-2017 school year and included several first time test takers as well as five students with previous ACT testing experience.

Student TestimonialFaculty members Sister Christa Marie (English and Reading) and Mr. Seth Elley (Math and Science) drilled students in the testing concepts, often reviewing material students had learned in previous instructional years. Practice tests were given on each day to familiarize students with the format of the test and the content of test instructions. Teachers spent time explaining the logic behind answer choices and students were able to graph their own performance improvement throughout the week.

Results were very encouraging. Those with previous ACT scores for comparison saw composite score improvements of up to four points, thereby positioning themselves for college acceptances and scholarship offerings.

In the area of reading, a school wide focus, students with previous ACT reading scores for comparison realized increases in scores, with one student achieving an eight point improvement!

Feedback from student participants via survey showed an overwhelming consensus that the class met the expectations of the students; they highly recommended that the course be repeated next year. Sister, Mr. Elley, and Mr. Toman (school counselor) are currently looking at the outcomes with course improvements in mind with a look to offering this aid to students once again.

Congratulations to those students who attended! We are proud of your commitment to academic excellence!
